California ground squirrel 5

California ground squirrel 5

The California ground squirrel (Otospermophilus beecheyi), is an easily observed ground squirrel common in Oregon and California. They live in burrows which they occupy communally, but each individual squirrel has its own entrance. In the colder parts of their range, such as in the Yosemite National Park, California ground squirrels hibernate for several months over winter; but in areas where winters have no snow, most squirrels are active year round.

They readily become tame in areas used by humans, and quickly learn to take food left or offered by picnickers. Generally they spend most of their time in close proximity to their burrow and relative safety.
